Preparation: Measurements, tools & workplace

The safe watch strap change begins with careful preparation. Place your watch on a soft surface – a microfiber cloth or a watch mat is ideal for this. To avoid scratches, you can cover the edges at the lugs with thin adhesive tape. Crucial is the lug width, i.e., the distance between the case lugs. Common sizes are 18, 20, and 22 mm, but intermediate sizes such as 19 or 21 mm also occur. Always choose a strap that fits exactly; otherwise, it won't sit securely or will look visually restless.

A spring bar tool with a forked tip is helpful, especially for classic straps. Modern quick-release straps, however, do not require tools, as they are equipped with a small lever. Always work slowly, in good light, and finally check by gently pulling if the strap is securely in place.

Quick-release strap – how to change it easily

The great advantage of quick-release straps is their user-friendliness. They have a small lever on the back that pulls the spring bar inwards. This allows the strap to be inserted or removed without tools. Quick-release straps are ideal for frequent wearers who like to combine their watch with different straps depending on the occasion.

  1. Place the watch face down on a soft surface.
  2. Locate the quick-release lever at the end of the strap.
  3. Gently pull the lever towards the center of the strap – the spring bar retracts.
  4. Remove the end of the strap from the lug.
  5. Insert the new strap: First, fix one side of the spring bar in the lug hole.
  6. Pull the lever again, insert the second side, release, and check the fit.

Classic spring bar – the proven method

Even though the classic spring bar requires a bit more dexterity, it is still the most common attachment method. With a suitable tool, you can securely remove and insert the strap. It is important to hit the spring tip precisely while gently pressing the strap downwards. This way, you avoid the spring bar springing out uncontrollably.

  1. Secure the watch on a soft surface, optionally protect the lugs with tape.
  2. Slide the forked tip of the tool between the strap and the lug, feel for the spring tip.
  3. Gently press the spring tip towards the center of the strap, simultaneously moving the strap slightly.
  4. The spring bar pops out, remove the strap.
  5. To insert: fix one side of the spring bar in the lug hole.
  6. Press in the opposite side, align the strap, and let it snap into place.
  7. Pull on the strap – both sides must be firmly seated.

Special feature: pass-through and NATO straps

NATO or pass-through straps are a popular alternative, as they sit very securely and can be changed in an instant. The strap is simply threaded through the two spring bars and passed back under the watch. They are perfect for sports watches, outdoor activities, or for anyone who likes to add a splash of color. Since the case rests on the strap, the watch appears slightly higher on the wrist.

Material Science: Leather, Silicone, Textile, Rubber & Precious Metal

Leather – natural, elegant, versatile

Leather has been the classic material for watch straps for centuries. It feels warm, is comfortable to wear, and develops a unique patina over time. Full-grain calfskin is considered robust and durable, while nubuck leather has a soft, velvety surface. Shell Cordovan, a particularly dense horse leather, is extremely hard-wearing and dimensionally stable. Leather straps are ideal for everyday wear, business environments, and dress watches, but should be protected from water as much as possible.

Silicone – sporty, easy-care, and waterproof

Silicone is the material for sports and outdoor activities. It is skin-friendly, flexible, and resistant to water, sweat, and sun exposure. Silicone straps are easy to clean and available in many colors. This makes them suitable for both sports activities and everyday summer wear.

Textile & NATO – lightweight and breathable

Textile straps, especially NATO straps, are known for their uncomplicated handling and versatility. They are breathable, washable, and available in countless colors and patterns. If you want to "dress" your watch regularly, this is an inexpensive and creative solution. The only disadvantage: they look less elegant than leather or metal.

Rubber – robust and durable

Rubber, especially high-quality FKM rubber, is extremely resistant to heat, saltwater, and chemicals. It is the preferred material for diver's watches and sports models, as it remains stable even under extreme conditions. Rubber straps combine high wearing comfort with enormous durability.

Precious metal straps – classic, solid and timeless

Precious metal straps made of stainless steel, titanium or gold-plated materials are particularly durable and give the watch a striking, solid appearance. Stainless steel is considered standard: resistant, easy to clean and versatile. Titanium is lighter and more skin-friendly, ideal for people with allergies. Gold-plated or two-tone straps set elegant accents and go perfectly with dressy watches. Metal straps are somewhat more demanding to change, as the links and end pieces must fit precisely – if in doubt, we will help you in our workshop.

How to recognize good straps

Quality always shows in the details. You can recognize a high-quality leather strap by clean, even stitching, a finely lacquered or polished edge, and a stable, rust-proof spring bar. For sports watches, particularly strong ("fat") spring bars are often useful as they offer additional security. A good silicone strap feels soft but not sticky, is evenly molded, and has a stable, precisely crafted clasp. Textile and NATO straps should be tightly woven, colorfast, and neatly sewn at the ends so they don't unravel. For metal straps, uniform, cleanly deburred links are crucial – no sharp edges, no play between the links, and a clasp that engages snugly and securely.

For quick-release straps, the spring bar is crucial: it must be smooth but not feel too loose. A high-quality strap clicks into place audibly at the lugs and remains stable even after frequent changes. Also, pay attention to the look: a strap that sits flush and without visible gaps against the case looks more premium and emphasizes the watch's design. If you cut corners here, you often regret it later – a good strap significantly increases the enjoyment of your watch.

Brands & Service – why advice pays off

In our assortment, you will find a curated selection of brands and models that we have deliberately chosen based on quality, design, and value for money. These include classic manufacturers of leather straps, innovative brands for rubber and silicone, and traditional manufactories for precious metal straps. Each brand brings its own strengths: some focus on craftsmanship and traditional tanning, others on high-tech materials made for sports and outdoors. This gives you the choice between timeless elegance and modern functionality.

Our service doesn't end with the sale. We precisely measure your watch at the lugs, help you choose the right length, and, if desired, professionally mount the strap immediately. This way, you avoid mispurchases or straps that don't fit correctly. Especially with metal or precious metal straps, which are often a bit more difficult to change, advice is particularly valuable. FAQ – Changing watch straps

What is the difference between a spring bar and a quick-release spring bar?

The classic spring bar is released with a tool by pressing the small spring tip inwards. Quick-release straps have a small integrated lever that can be moved with the fingers – completely without tools.

How do I find the correct lug width?

Measure the distance between the case lugs with a ruler or caliper. Typical values are 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 or 22 mm. Intermediate sizes such as 19 or 21 mm are also possible. A precisely fitting strap is essential for a secure fit.

What is the right strap length for my wrist?

The length depends on your wrist circumference. Leather straps are usually available in standard (approx. 120/80 mm) or XL. Silicone and textile straps usually cover different circumferences thanks to many holes. For metal straps, links can be removed or added.

Can I change a metal bracelet myself?

In principle, yes, but changing stainless steel or titanium bracelets is more complex. End pieces and links must fit precisely, and the spring bars are under stronger tension. If you are unsure, we will gladly change it for you in our shop.

Which straps are waterproof and suitable for sports?

Silicone and rubber straps are ideal for sports, swimming and outdoor activities. Textile/NATO straps are washable and breathable. Leather should be worn as dry as possible. Stainless steel and titanium straps are also insensitive to water.

How do I properly care for leather and silicone straps?

Wipe leather regularly with a dry cloth and, if necessary, care for it with leather balm. Clean silicone with water and mild soap and then let it dry thoroughly. Metal straps can be cleaned with a soft brush and lukewarm water.

Are quick-release straps safe enough for everyday wear?

Yes, if they are installed correctly. Make sure both sides click audibly into place. Test the fit by gently pulling on the strap – this way you play it safe.

How often should I change my watch strap?

That depends on the material and your lifestyle. Leather straps often last 1–2 years with normal use, silicone and rubber much longer. Metal straps are very durable but need cleaning from time to time. If you want to vary your watch fashionably, you can, of course, change it more often.

Can I continue to use my old strap?

Yes, as long as it is still intact and the spring bars are stable. Look out for cracks in the leather, stretched holes, or damaged links in metal straps. If in doubt, it's better to replace it – the security of your watch depends on the strap.

How do I recognize the quality of a strap?

Clean edges, even seams, stable clasps, and a precise fit at the lugs are good indicators. For metal straps, deburred links and a snugly engaging clasp are important.

Can spring bars be reused?

Spring bars can be reused as long as they are not bent or damaged. However, over time they lose tension. If you want to be on the safe side, replace them when changing the strap.

Do you offer an on-site changing service?

Yes, in our store in Worb (Bern, Thun, Burgdorf, Emmental region), we will change your strap professionally. We measure the lug width, advise on material selection, and mount the strap with the appropriate tools – quickly, cleanly, and safely.
