Collaboration with the US Army
The excellent illumination in Luminox watches has led to Luminox developing a diver's watch for the US NAVY SEALS in collaboration with the US Army, which meets the high demands of this special unit. The US Army relies on high quality and ordered over 500,000 wristwatches in 1994. A watch was also developed for the US Air Force, specifically for the pilots of the STEALTH F-117 Nighthawk aircraft. All watches undergo strict quality controls before delivery and must meet certain requirements. The watch that the US Navy SEALs use for their units must meet the following requirements: water resistance up to 200 meters, shock-resistant case, scratch-resistant glass and precise timekeeping.
The Luminox Story
In 1993, two Americans, Richard Timbo and Barry Cohen, decided to develop a watch with unique illumination. In cooperation with a Swiss physical institute and the Swiss watch industry, a wristwatch was built that was equipped with a self-powered illumination system. Luminox, the ultimate brightest watch in the world, was born. Luminox watches are manufactured with the utmost care in Switzerland and meet the highest quality standards. The name LUMINIOX expresses the uniqueness of the illumination system and was therefore chosen as the identity for the watch.
1994 was a major milestone for Luminox when they were contacted by an officer from a US Navy SEALs team to develop a robust dive watch for night operations for this elite unit. The Navy SEALs Series S-3000 was completed after 9 months of intensive development and delivered to the US Navy Seals. Its introduction to the civilian US market was also very successful. Following the great sales success of several 100,000 wristwatches, in 1999 the Navy SEALs with stainless steel cases, the S-3100 series, and in 2000 the Navy SEALs with titanium cases, the S-3600 series, were introduced into the US Army's range and to the US American market.
Edwards Air Force Base contacted Luminox in 1999 and said that the Air Force greatly appreciated Luminox watches and wore them even during their bombing missions. The only thing they didn't like was that it was made for the Navy... The development of a wristwatch for the US Air Force was immediately initiated. The S-3402 "Stealth" Pilot Watch, which is worn by the pilots of the F-117 Nighthawk Stealth aircraft during their missions today, is the result of these efforts.
The Illumination System
Luminox watches contain small self-illuminating Traser luminous elements, which are manufactured by the world's leading Swiss physical institute for illumination components, Mb-Microtec. These distinctive elements are permanently embedded in the hands, hour markers, and, in Luminox dive watches, additionally on the rotating bezel. The marking of position 12 with orange color and green color for the other positions makes it possible to recognize every Luminox model at any time. Tritium Luminox wristwatches are different from conventional luminous paint watches. They do not require an external light source to charge the color on the dial. Nor do they require a button press to illuminate the dial. The US Army quickly recognized the advantages of the new light sources - their use is prescribed in specification MIL-W-46374F. The Swiss military has also recognized the positive aspects of these light sources and has equipped the night sight of the assault rifle with a light source.
