Portrait of Luigi Colani
Born in Berlin in 1928 to a Swiss film architect and a Polish prompter, Luz Colani (his baptismal name) cultivated a cosmopolitan lifestyle from a young age.
He dropped out of his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts and instead studied aerodynamics and ultra-lightweight construction at the École Polytechnique in Paris, where he believed he would learn more. After his first professional years with a Californian aircraft manufacturer and a French car body company, he next made a name for himself with Italian car brands and from then on called himself Luigi Colani.
Streamlined shapes, organic contours, and dynamic curves were Colani's trademarks. With great practical intelligence and creative energy, he developed his bio-design not only for automobiles and airplanes but for almost all everyday objects. This led to his incomparable watch collection in the 80s.
